Copenhagen, early 1920s. Danish artist, Gerda Wegener, painted her own husband, Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne), as a lady in her painting. When the painting gained popularity, Einar started to change his appearance into a female appearance and named himself Lili Elbe. With his feminism passion and Gerda's support, Einar - or Elbe attempted first-ever male to female sex reassignment surgery, a decision that turned into a massive change for their marriage, that Gerda realized her own husband is no longer a man or the person she married before. A childhood friend of Einar, art-dealer Hans Axgil (Matthias Schoenaerts), shows up and starts a complex love triangle with the couple. Written by Gusde

Inspired by actual events, an artist trapped in a man's body discovers he's a woman underneath, and the movie goes through the processes, one step at a time of his transformation. From feeling the comfort of wearing women's clothing under men's, to finding a doctor that would like to try an experimental surgery that can make Einar, who wants to live his life as Lilli, completely whole. All the while, receiving love and support from Gerda, Einar's wife who loves her husband so much that she understands his need to be whole, even when it met loosing him.
It's a love story on a different level. Eddie Redmayne did a spectacular job allowing us to get into the head of what Einar was going through to get Lili out.
It's a wonderful and every emotional movie to watch
